Hamedan |

The
province of Hamedan is located in the west of Iran, and the
city of Hamedan, the capital of this province, in one of the
most ancient and historical cities of Iran.
Its origin
goes back to the second millennium b.C. the Medes made in
their capital. After the conquest of Alexander the Great the
Greek (331 b.C.) name Ekbatana was used.
This
province is one of the most important regions in Iran that
produces large quantities of carpets, but usually they are
of commercial quality. Sometimes one can find fine carpets
in Hamedan. Few villages make carpets (large size) but rugs
predominate, with one or two areas specialising in runners.
In this
province the carpets are woven in floral and stylised
patterns.
Their
designs are corner medallion, flower bouquets, Botteh-Miri,
interlaced fish design, which is also known as Harati and
Zell-e-Sultan.
The knots
of the Hamedan carpets are often Ghiordes and they are
thick-piled.
Many years
ago the colors used for weaving them was natural beige or
camel wool which had a great success amidst the Europeans,
as they found them very suitable to spread in the dark and
narrow corridors and halls of their buildings. Nowadays they
still use these natural colors.

Meshkin
Meshkin carpets which are generally found in runner formats,
are related to Caucasian rugs in design.
Sizes: mostly runner up to 8 sq. m (87 sq. ft.).
Colors; often light to dark brown, also blue with the
ornaments drawn in strong red, green, light blue and white
shades,
Patterns: multiple polygons, hooked diamonds or lozenges
with small primitive filler motifs. The simple colorful
borders often contain stylized human and animal figures.
Foundation: Warps and welts are of cotton or wool.
Knots: densely woven in Turkish knots; rather coarse, with
up to 1,000 knots per sq. dm (65 per sq. in.).
Pile: firm and high in mainly dull, rarely lustrous, wool.
Quality: sturdy, unpretentious pieces in good natural
colors, and rather somber in design. Old and antique pieces
are often extremely beautiful and are among the rarities the
rarities from the Persian Caucasus. |
